100-Word Review: Chevelle – La Gárgola

Chevelle - La GargolaThis is one of the pile I’m trying to get through at present. I loaded my phone up with a ton of un-listened-to albums prior to going on holiday, but sadly only really had time to listen to them on the flight out and back. Lucky (for me, and them), Chevelle’s new album was one of those that popped up at random during that window and it’s a corker. It’s out now – release was June 9th – and they played as well.

Better late than never, as they say…

This is a belter of an album. Distorted guitars and wailed vocals fill your ears on every track as the beat physically forces your head to nod back and forth.

I can get the fact that some reviewers have likened them to Tool. Vague memories of Aenima creep into my head as I listen, but Chevelle definitely have a sound all of their own.

This isn’t an album of unrelenting pace and ferocity, but when it’s not yelling at you it’s building up to pummel once more. Essentially, the calm bits are there preceding musical storm after musical storm. Quality.
