I was pretty impressed by the lead single “Guts” which I featured on the page a few weeks ago, so asked if I could grab a copy of the EP to review. The nice people at Inception readily agreed and then I got buried in broken PCs and the start of a new term.

Anyway, trawling through the backlog as ever, I’ve caught up to it. So This Is Home is a 5-track punk/post-something rock EP by a bunch of mentals from the Midlands.
As a calling card for labels in an effort to get signed, it’s not bad at all. As a way of convincing punters like you to part with their cash and perhaps drag your arse a gig it should work very well indeed. The strongest thing about it is the variety of the songs on there. This isn’t a band stuck in a rut. They’ve go ability, ideas and potential.
Opener “Maybe You’ll Drown” is quite a slow, sombre number that grows into something a bit more melodic then noisy throughout its short running length. “Guts” is up next and is definitely the standout track – the chose their lead single well. Listen to it below.
“Barfly” is more along those lines, but a little less bouncy. More staccato and in-your-face, but no less sing-along-to-able. Slow and melodic makes another appearance with “The Whole World is Ending in my Head” which is probably the closest you’ll get to a punk band doing a ballad.
Rounding things off is “Long Winters” which almost fits in between the two extremes demonstrated by the first four tracks. Rhythms of “Barfly”, bouncy bits like “Guts”, downbeat lyrics like the other two songs.
Overall, for £4, this is a damn good collection. If you like the track below then I think you’ll enjoy it.
