charity show in November, I’ll just sling up the review of Devilment’s forthcoming debut album The Great and Secret Show. Rather aptly, given it’s somewhat off-kilter theme, the album’s due out on October 31st.
Devilment is, essentially, another Dani Filth side project although he wasn’t a founder member. He helped resurrect the band after the original line-up disintegrated and took on lyric writing and vocal duties. As such, the songs are somewhat macabre and twisted in a “let’s look inside The Joker’s head” kind of way.
Rather than heading own the dark and sinister pathway, the eeriness is superseded by a more frenetic, up front musical pace. Think Wednesday 13, but with more of the Filth trappings.
I’ve never been a fan of Cradle of Filth, so don’t feel that you have to like any of his past output to give this a try. Each of the tracks is different enough to stand on its own, and it’s a good collection overall. Tracks vary in heaviness, but never get too death/extreme, making it a fairly easy listen and one where you can enjoy the lyrics. It also comes across as one designed to be played live, especially with the right theatrics to back it up.
Highlight tracks? For me “Living with the Fungus” has a ton of variety and “Mother Kali” which follows – it makes good use of the Indian heritage of the song’s central character.
Better than I expected it to be, for sure. There’s a video due out soon for “Even Your Blood Group Rejects Me”, but in the meantime check out the one they’ve already released for the aforementioned “Mother Kali”. Oh, and they’re touring in November with Lacuna Coil and Motionless in White. Dates below.
