Band of the Day a year ago.
Explositive is already out, being released a week or so ago depending on where you live. It’s the usual collection of heavy beats, catchy rhythms and overall silliness.
Opener “Dance” throws all of these at you in one three-minute blast. Oddball singing, something that sounds like one of those pipes that snake-charmers play, a chorus that hooks your ears and a bridge you can headbang to. This is the kind of tune that has crowds pogo-ing.
“Why” is more percussion-based, but again with the kind of chorus that anyone can pick up after a single listen. “Just Propaganda”‘s verses remind me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for some funky reason, while the chorus and breaks are pure Kontrust. The plunky bass sound comes into its own in “Play!”, though – Flea would make the perfect guest musician on this one.
The albums climaxes with the alternately heavy and psychedelic “Bad Time”. A strange mix, but one that seems to feel par for the course once you’ve listened to the preceding ten tracks.
Overall, I’m not finding the album quite as catchy as their last, but I’m giving it time to grow on me. Kontrust are a band I’m looking forward to seeing live one day and I’m hoping they’ll hit the UK touring on this album.
Stand-out tracks for me are “Just Propaganda” and “Shut Up” – I prefer the faster stuff that makes you want to jump around, but Kontrust always seem to add a nice twist to this.
