[avatar =”Mosh” size=”50″ align=”left” /]Proof positive that the review pile gets out of hand is this little article, which will hopefully praise the wonderful current album from Danish tech metallers Scamp. The Deadcalm came out in June 2014 and has been sat on my phone, hidden in a corner amongst a billion (approx.) other mp3s since before then.
Random play located it the other day and I’m glad it did. So apologies for lateness, but the album’s still available so I feel it my duty to let you know about it!
Scamp aren’t a band I’d heard of before, but The Deadcalm isn’t their first outing. Their previous album Mirror Faced Mentality won them “Debut Album of the Year” at the Danish Metal Music Award. I’m not sure exactly which genre to put them in, but I’d go for something like “metalcore with a shitload of groove attached”. Very catch, very heavy, lovely varied sound.
Pretty much every track starts very much “in your face”, but the catchy riffs and head-nod-inducing grooves kick in shortly after. There’s the occasional break into more melodic territory with tracks like “Deadhead” and the title track. I’m not sure how well these would work live, but they give the album a bit of variety and come as a pleasant surprise when they arrive.
Talking of the title track, for all its differences from the rest of the album it makes for one of the best tracks as a result. A great build a the beginning rather than the instant kick, it’s almost an emotional listen and a great way to finish off the twelve tracks. Alongside “Edge of Devastation” and “Adrian” with it’s bass-heavy beginning, you have a nice collection of key tracks surrounded by a great ing cast.
If you like something to make you grown and bang your head, this one’s definitely worth a listen.
