Sleep Inertia are a new band, formed by ex- of The Dead Lay Waiting. On March 20th, they’ll release their debut 5-track EP Growth, Decay, Transformation and we’ve had a copy to listen to for a day or three.
Genre-wise it’s hard to pigeonhole. The band themselves just say they’re “metal” and that’s undoubtedly true, but they’re probably in one of the “…core” subgenres. Having said that, there are some very death metal style vocals in places, and some near-thrash riffs here and there.
Opener and recent single “Growth” creeps up on you with a very gentle beginning before pounding your ears into… whatever ears become if they’re pounded by a heavy thing. Mush? Whatever. “Nor-Easter” is my personal pick from the five, with a lovely clean section in the middle, but also some of the heaviest and simplest rhythms the band have to offer.
“Decay” is closer to death/extreme metal in its opening blast, before side-stepping into some melodic vocals and then stepping the tempo up a bit and getting all evil again. “Dark enger” goes for the slow and heavy approach (but still with some interesting clean breaks) before EP closer “Transformation” soars its way out of the speakers and brings things to a close.
Take a listen to “Growth” below and get your pre-orders in if this is your type of thing.
