Review: The King Lot – The King Lot

[avatar =”Mosh” size=”50″ align=”left” /]The King Lot are a band from Scotland with a name that, at first, seems like an amusingly childish abbreviation. It turns out,  though, that it’s a historical reference to the King of Lothian from Arthurian times. History lesson over, what’s their music like?

Well the band cite influences such as G’n’R, The Wildhearts, Love/Hate, Thunder… good, banging rock. This definitely carries through into their sound and there are certain points when listening to their self-titled debut when I really felt that they were channelling Ugly Kid Joe.

The King Lot is ten tracks of blazing rock ‘n’ roll, a great first release from a band that’s just bubbling with promise. Driving, bouncy, gritty and loud.

Opener “As They Burn” is just slapping your face from the off. More hooks than a whole street of fishing supply shops, rapid lyrics yet with a catchy chorus. It follows the typical pattern of verse/chorus/verse/chorus/musical exit and is a great introduction to the album.

“One of These Days” is a little more gentle, but no less a rock song for it. Definitely a song to sing along to in the car.

Fourth track “Telegram” has a huge sound to it. Lilting verses give way to a particularly powerful chorus that would be perfect in a large concert setting.

“All Is Not Lost” and “Ghost of You” show off the band’s lighter side with far gentler pacing. The former has a vague country twang to it and actually reminds me a little of XLR8R (many of my friends from Tyneside will this quality act that sadly never made it to the big time).

Obviously out to demonstrate the range of their talents with this outing, the album draws to a close with a belting rock number (“The Bang of a Drum”) followed by a stonking acoustic foot-tapper, “Queen of Hearts”.

It’s hard to believe that The King Lot is only a three-piece from the depth and range of the noise they make. Definitely a band to keep an eye on, and more importantly an ear out for.

The King Lot is already out and can be ed from iTunes and Amazon or you can order a CD from their big cartel store.
