Hailing from Lebanon, progressive metal outfit Turbulence came up this year with the release of their debut full-length album Disequilibrium. The album represents a potent collection of melodic progressive metal, with a sound capturing a range from Dream Theater to Ayreon to Symphony X.
Disequilibrium demands patience and careful listening. Even though you may want to break the album up into pieces,
Turbulence keep you engaged from the start. After the intro “Hypnagogia,” “Richardson’s Nightmare” shows the course the Lebanese pursue.
There are lots of shifting movements and signatures in arrangements powered by big riffing, an immense rhythm section, bold vocals, interesting guitar solos, and then tempered with nice piano and symphonic layers. While the pace can moderate between and within songs, most of the tunes are wrapped in a heavier sound.
It is obvious that the raw strength of Turbulence’s prog metal skills come in the longer pieces: “My Darkest Hour” and the title song. Both tunes are heavy, melodic and intense in the same time; the latter blends the best of all those elements into a more complete and complex format. While melody plays a part in every song, when it rises to the top with clarity as with “Disequilibrium”, Turbulence are even more convincing and confident.
Overall, with Disequilibrium Turbulence deliver progressive metal with strength and creativity, crystallising into one of the bands to place under the radar.
