UK dates with Bowling For Soup… and recording this three-track collection.
Mama’s Gonna Knock You Out kind of lives up to its title, being a short, sharp suckerpunch. Just enough to give you a taste of the band, right in the smacker, before it’s gone. Unlike being punched in the face, though, you find yourself wanting another shot right afterwards. It’s like some mad scientist has crossed bodily harm with Chinese food.
What The Dollyrots are known for is bouncy, “bubblegum” pop/punk and in this small collection it’s been condensed into something that’s probably highly volatile. The package opens with “Save Me” which reminds me a bit of Avril Lavigne when she was good (yes, I like Avril Lavigne – deal with it). Short, blasted riffs and a chorus you can yell from the rooftops. Or at a BFS gig in February.
“Little Medusa” is the title track insomuch as the EP title appears as a lyric. Another uplifting little number with somewhat more airy vocals which will have you tapping your toe in no time.
It’s all over far too quickly with the belter that is “Sweaty Hug My Love”. This one’s more a crowd-pumper and the sort of thing that should find audiences jumping up and down with a fist in the air. A couple of nice quiet bits give things a chance to build. Like the kind of music where you spend an hour waiting for some dick with some turntables or an iPod to “drop the bass”? Get a grip. This is real music, with much the same effect.
If this is the kind of thing The Dollyrots can crank out on a whim to get people in the door early enough to see them when they hit the UK then they should get a return on that investment. Buy it, buy their old stuff and look forward to them warming you up from head to toe next year. Hell, wouldn’t it be nice to catch them on a headlining tour? Just saying.
Mama’s Gonna Knock You Out is released on January 29th (or pledge towards their live album and you can get it from Dec 25th!)
