The Cavalera Clan takes another step towards complete worldwide metal domination with this release. Dreams and Visions is the focal project of Igor (vocals/guitars) and Zyon (drums) Cavalera, sons of Max and Gloria, and is due for release on March 25th.
It’s no secret that the two boys have been raised in an atmosphere so full of metal that their lungs are probably coated in steel. What is interesting is what’s come out of this. Lody Kong seem to snatch little pieces of metal history and place them into a dirty, down-tuned mixture. It’s inevitable that they’ll be compared to their father’s original output so to get that out of the way – the “feel” is more of the very early Sepultura, whereas the production is a little closer to Arise, particularly the track “Some Pulp”.
Dreams and Visions has quite a bit of punk influence as well. Sleezy, angry, but with a helping of more modern heavy, grinding influences – it’s an album that pounds rather than thrashes. That’s not to say that it’s slow. Take album-closer “Venomous Kool-Aid” for instance. No wonder they put it down as track ten – they’d need a rest after belting through that one. Despite this, though, it’s got a marvellous groove throughout. You know what they say about leaving your best till last? That’s your encore track right there.
It’s not the only strong track on the album, though, not by a long shot. “Smashed and Blasted” is an absolute crusher though overall much slower. The title track is another that just screams in your face and should encourage much physical damage when played live.
The whole album is nicely rough around the edges at places, which fits perfectly with the music. Oftentimes things are sharp and clean, but when the heavy kicks in, the distortion is cranked up and it just makes it all the more chaotic.
A strong collection of tracks from a bunch of guys who work their arses off and definitely aren’t just riding on Daddy’s reputation. Sure, it doesn’t hurt having the Cavalera name but by putting out their own album, they’ve shown what they are capable of. I hope it does well enough to warrant a follow-up, just to further prove this point.
