During the 90s Seattle was the haven for a musical evolution with bands such as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone and Pearl jam to name a few. The grunge scene hit the world and the world didn’t know what to do.
The genre died when Kurt Cobain left these mortal grounds.
The music scene in Seattle is re-emerging with vibrancy, many musicians are coming to the forefront to deliver their sound to the world. One of those people is Ellensberg musician Star Anna, who has released her fourth album, eight track, Light in the Window to add to her growing catalogue.
This album is eight songs of ion that not many musicians’ are able to achieve, Star Anna seems to have a super power that’s able to evoke emotion with a guitar strum.
First track is album namesake “Light in The Window” which sets the mood of the album. The track Oozes’ contemplation with the sentence “Long Lost Brothers”. A tender guitar sound moulds well with the vocal skills of Star Anna, this reminds me of The Civil Wars. Leading to “Leaving Song” which carries the thought provoking meditative style. “You’ll miss me when I’m gone,” Star Anna whispers, “so it’s time to move on”.
This album has ability to make you lay down on a new sofa, reminiscing to the chords being plucked, strummed and caressed and “Big Bad Wolf” has that feeling in abundance. Star Anna has created an experience and what can a “Bad Wolf do” is asked.
“God, I was so ugly inside, I was looking for a good place to hide, on the edge of the bed coming from a cocaine high” this is ‘Man That I am’ the highlight record. A track that’s about the ever circling lifestyle that’s going nowhere. “My flesh and bones I’ve got blood on my hands” this is one song that would sound perfect in a small venue with Star Anna and her trusty sidekick, the guitar. This is beauty in its dark form coming alive. “The Man I Am”.
“Everything You Know” is a remake of some sort of her own song from 2013s ‘Go to Hell’ the re made version doesn’t take anything away from the previous incarnation as they befit both version. The sound is impeccable, the acoustic sound with the lyric “Everything you know….is gonna die” fits completely to this style of record.
“Down to the Bottom” completes the album. I’ve had the privileged of seeing Star Anna live, in a bar in Seattle called Chop Suey. I sat in this small candlelit room, her talent makes you feel she’s playing just for you.
I’m going to leave you with a quote from Duff McKagan, in 2013 said “I hope you already know about our latest and greatest songbird: She’s one part Ann Wilson, another part Patsy Cline, and all parts motherfucker.”
