Exeter-based Skyborn are a 5-piece, who last month released their debut EP, Bedlam. We managed to snag a copy and give it a spin (or three). So what do we think of Devon’s latest bunch of noise merchants?
With a wealth of modern-day influences, the opening groove of “Chaos” is familiar yet original. Driving, catchy and enough to have your foot tapping. When the vocals come in, think FFDP’s lighter side. This is something you can sing along to. The song ploughs on and continues to build to a rousing climax.
The vocals are further forward in the mix for “High”, allowing frontman Lewis a bit more of a chance to show of his style. Again, though, it’s that chugging rhythm that really sells the song – Chrissyy on bass and Roy on drums really keep the band ticking over on every track. Marc and Darren’s mixed guitar work wrap everything together and “High”, I think, is the best track on the EP in of showing off each member’s strengths.
“Godkiller” is undoubtedly the heaviest track of the five, especially at the beginning. Crushing and doomy with Lewis’ vocals dropped down a step from the previous song. This is followed by “Last Sight” which has a fair bit of a Southern Rock groove to it.
EP closer “Virus” channels older Pantera in the opening, then swerves into a more modern take on their genre. An impressive way to wrap things up.
Another fine example of young metal raising its angry head and making us aware that our music has a safe future.
