Review: An Assfull Of Love – Monkey Madness

So, erm, yeah. An Assfull Of Love, a name that jumped out and said “review us because we sound mad”. Given that the album’s title track includes the word “bananapocalypse”, that’s not false advertising.

Hailing from , this punk’n’roll band don’t take anything seriously other than their musicianship. Sure, they’re silly but they can also pen a decent collection of songs. From the outright riotous nuttiness of the opening title song, through the RH-ish funky bass plunks in “Bang Bang Boom” (which would have legally had to be a Eurovision Song Contest entry in the 1980’s due purely to the name) to the more Die Toten Hosen-esque punk edge of “Allergy to Stupidity” (I think it’s the vague German accent and harmonised vocals), we have a fine, bouncy dozen songs on display here.

An Assfull Of Love seem to have taken the trappings of modern pop punk, stripped away the pretentiousness that some bands have kicking around, and ramped up the fun angle. Even their more emotive tracks, such as “Hipsterland”, Sunrise” and the opening of “No Pants, No Problem”, are catchy, funny and great to sing along to. That’s not to say they can’t write something you can kick a pit off to – “Sucker” is loud, raucous and potentially violent; definitely more punk than pop.

Due to the fact that the band have opened their arms and ears to a wide variety of influences, we have a dozen songs with their own personality and each one is a winner. Monkey Madness is quite simply fun. It’s an album you can bounce to, nod your head to and party to. I just bet An Assfull Of Love are incredible live. Though, ittedly, it would be embarrassing asking for a ticket over the counter…

Monkey Madness is out on August 25th

Very German. Apart from the bass player. But I guess we now know what David Cameron has been up to since leaving office. Bang bang booming it, with an arse full of love.
