Review: Pretty Little Enemy – Second Load

Pretty Little Enemy formed in early 2015 in the South West of England. Building a dedicated following which is quickly spreading across the rest of the UK and beyond. The self-proclaimed “metal ABBA” have earned a reputation for putting on a great show, and this has led to slots with the likes of Crazy Town, Hed P.E, Dave Mherson, The Lounge Kittens, Courage My Love, Halflives, Empire and The Gospel Youth amongst others.

These Minehead alt-rockers are Louise Body (vocals), Georgie Bell (guitar), Jason Coles (bass) and Ben Dean on drums and are set to release their four-track EP Second Load on the 15th September 2017.

Lead single “Get A Grip” begins with Georgie Bell belting a riff that’ll awake sleeping work colleagues. Louise Body’s vocals are theatrical, picture her standing on a stage as the pyro kicks out around her. This track’s been getting a lot of airplay on many of the finest UK rock shows on offer. The power drumming of Ben Dean and guitar screeching of Bell mould well, giving the headbanging pogo-ing mosh pit a chance to let off steam. Louise Body’s clean vocals shows this frontwoman can hold a note.

Pretty Little Enemies stories are from an emotive perspective. Second track “Collide” is a good follow-on from the lead single. Louise Body’s catchy phrase “I held it all in the palm of my hand”. Ben Dean’s kickdrum powers through the vocals, the guitar with Jason Coles’ bass is enjoyable to the ear. Fortunately Georgie Bell took a well-earned break to re-build her energy with her explosive riffs.

Continuing with “Play by The Rules”, Pretty Little Enemy follow their formula of clean vocals with heavy background a la Jim Steinman’s Bat Out of Hell musical. The final track, “It’s All Just a Show”, continues with hard riffs, heavy drumming and a beat by Coles enabling Body to perform her vocals. You cannot fault this fledgling band’s work ethic. Gigging constantly, learning their trade.
