Album Review: Hoobastank – Push Pull

Hoobastank are back with their sixth studio album Push Pull, a Matt Wallace (Faith No More) production is released 25th May via Napalm Records. Push Pull is the latest addition to the ten million albums the band sold worldwide. The band’s history will encourage pals dreaming of forming bands to continue and try to thrive.

Doug Robb vocalist/guitarist set the band up with two classmates, Dan Estrin and Chris Hesse in the suburb of Los Angeles. The three remain potent forces and in 2009 the addition of bassist Jesse Charland has kept the flow these guys created since exploding into the post-grunge world.

Push Pull opens with “Don’t Forget” its electronic beats and Doug Ross’ harmonies are interesting with the beat of Chris Hesse. “More Beautiful” the first release of Push Pull continues their form of vocal melodies and a tune that will get many to move those hips at the bar. Hoobastank cover Tears for Fears “Head over Heels” is surprising and performed with dark undertones which, to be honest, I love. I’m always wary of bands/musicians covering classic tunes, some keep it to the classic and don’t give it their own feel. Good news is the L.A guys give this their own touch.

There are touches of Maroon 5 but heavier, harder riffs and drum beats compared to the fivers. There’s plenty of emotion throughout this album, especially in “True Believer” and the versatile “We Don’t Need the World” showing maturity over this twenty-year period, using groove melodies for people to give their hips a gyrate.

“Buzzkill” kicks off with a groove-laden riff as the vocals are rather sensual throughout. “Fallen Star” is a powerful emotive story of a fallen soldier and the bereaved family and they perform this with their heart on their sleeve thanking the soldier for what they have done for them.

It’s six years since the album before Push Pull was released. It seems and sounds like the guys have a more polished sound and their writing has grown emotionally. Push Pull has an abundance of feelings for their fans to know about and share with them.
