Album Review: The Night Flight Orchestra – Aeromantic

The Night Flight Orchestra, NFO for short, are a band that in many ways aren’t necessarily metal or rock. They’re their own thing and play a mix of 80’s rock and AOR which, whilst being exceptionally cheesy, is super good fun. Made up of of Soilwork, Arch Enemy and other bands, the 8 piece have been slowly but surely growing over the years.

Opening track, the aptly titled “Servants Of The Air” sets the tone of the album perfectly and would be extremely at home in one of those older airline adverts that used to be on the TV. The vocals of Björn slot in perfectly alongside the other instruments and showcase his exceptional clean vocal range. Following track “Divinyls” continues this trend and has one of the catchiest guitar and keyboard riffs that you’ll probably hear this year. Throw in a chorus which is just as catchy and you’ve got one of the strongest tracks on the album.

“Curves” is where some more of the AOR influences start to appear with a melody that almost resembles part of “The Living Infinite I” from the Soilwork album of the same name. Unlike that track however, there’s no blast beats or harsh vocals. Instead, we’ve got an exceptional clean guitar solo and the sort of chorus you can’t help but sing along to. The overdriven guitars do appear once again however, as “Aeromantic” takes a more epic rock slant with overdriven guitars and Anna-Mia and Anna sharing vocal melodies with Björn which sound fantastic.

The pace increases ever so slightly and the synths come back once again for “Taurus” which has a rather excellent bass-line as well. An expertly executed radio effect at the end of this track signals the arrival of the equally up-beat and synth laden “Carmencita Seven”. Once again, the t vocal melodies between all the vocalists provide the cherry on top the 80’s style cake which is suitably tasty on this track.

Rounding out the album, “City Lights and Moonbeams” sounds like it was taken from an album right in the heart of the 80’s and comes complete with all the sounds you’d expect. Synth keys with driving melodies, overdriven guitar solos and the vocal harmonies of Anna-Mia, Anna and Björn combine to create a song that rounds out the album just perfectly.

As mentioned at the beginning, this music is cheesy. Like, seriously cheesy. However, you can’t help but smile when you listen to it. Is it something you’ll listen to everyday? Probably not, but you can guarantee that it’ll brighten your day each time you do.
