It’s tough times we live in, musicians and the arts no exception. Therefore it’s pretty amazing to see so many albums coming through to us still to be reviewed as scheduled and not being delayed for ‘better times’, as music is surely the only reliant medicine we have right now. I know it is for me.
After reviewing first single “Waiter”, I couldn’t wait to get stuck into the rest of Moses’ debut album Almost Everything Is Bullshit.
After multiple single and EP releases Moses have received some hefty across the board, including a big thumbs up from
BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Virgin Radio and Radio X. They’ve also had their music on key Spotify playlists, two movies and on Good Morning Britain, so the word is certainly spreading!
Almost Everything Is Bullshit is surely the anthem we all need right now and it’s exactly what Moses deliver on this 10-track slab of sublime indie rock. I think we’ve all taken a step back and appreciated what’s most important in our lives right now and it’s almost as if Moses had a premonition here, it’s an album of humanity, stripped back the bare necessities of life.
“Cause You Got me” literally about holding each other up when things are tough is a huge anthemic intro to the album that’s just begging to be heard across summer festivals everywhere. With its ridiculously catchy chorus, rock n’ roll riffs and contuse drumming you can just visualise huge crowds sweating and bouncing along. It’s a smashing opener and sets the mood for the entire album.
Punchy and melodic follower “You Need L” is another killer track and if you love your 90’s indie rock as much as I do you already know you’re going to love this album, it’s familiar musically and reawakens old memories but injects you with something new and exciting, I guess something I’ve been waiting for, a new wave of Brit Pop maybe? With the likes of bands such as Idles and Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes exploding almost overnight, it seems raw, authentic music with a relevant social commentary is what people want right now, well, add Moses to your playlists you’re not gonna be disappointed. “River Thames” a radiant example of this.
“Who Needs The Money” with its funky laid back trippy verses blended with massive psych-rock choruses has me hitting replay again and again. The divine, stripped back tracks “Waiter” and album closer “Constantin” sit perfectly within the album, all vulnerabilities laid bare within their delicate melodies and lyrics. “Joy” provides an immediate uplift musically, with a yet again infectious chorus just screaming to be played out live.
Bass driven, funky “Basically” is mashed with angsty punk choruses – ‘I don’t like you’ screams and all the ‘lalalalala’s’ you want. You can’t but help sing along. Those infectious chorus keep coming with “Crocodile” with its deadly riffs and militant drumming. “Findings” encomes the whole feel of the album and is an absolute sign of the times ‘Give me love, give me hope’, ‘Hold On’ it’s a sublime, uplifting track, just beautiful.
There’s not a bum note on this album for me, each song stands out for different reasons, and each quite different yet the essence of Moses flavours the tracks throughout, the production just highlighting the brilliance in every song.
