“How heavy and brash could just bass and drums get?” is a question that long term rhythm section compadres Rob Skitt (drums) and Nick Dutton (bass) started asking themselves at the start of 2019. Soul Vultures is the answer to that question. Influenced by a wide range of artists and genres including Melvins, Big Business and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the band are pushing forward into 2020 having put together their first EP Songs In The Key of Evil.
Dropping the CD into the player (yes actual hard copy – joy!) I couldn’t wait to get my teeth into this promising sounding taster of new band Soul Vultures. Well it damn near blew my speakers up!
Twelve minutes of full throttle, no holds barred, dark noise rock tracks are delivered for your aural pleasure. “Burn, Burn, Burn” is an absolutely brutal opener, chaotic and dissonant with crunching bass tones and feral drumming battering against Skitt and Dutton’s punk like squalls, it’s an absolute neck ripper.
Unrelenting, the EP stomps through “Don’t Follow” keeping the fast pace and viscous power. “Rats Galors!” is full on sludge. Filthy bass tones and that implacable rabid drumming carrying waves of punk lyrics spat through gritted teeth.
These guys really make their best with this fast and metal music. Some people say that this sound is similar to one while spinning pokies and getting fast casino payout with moshville-co-uk.casinowinning.net in New Zealand. It is a pleasure to hear them.
Closing with the colossal “Sycophantic Enabler”, it’s my favourite track on here. Brutal from the outset, it’s a pissed off number. The deafening sound this two piece achieve is quite remarkable, this dark and heavy piece punches right into your face repeatedly and I feel myself shouting along to ‘rinse, rinse, rinse and repeat’.
It’s a great introduction to this noise rock duo from the West Midlands. I can’t wait to hear what they have in store for us!
