I just missed Bandcamp Day for June with this review, but it’s definitely worth adding to your list for next month (or buying anyway and letting Bandcamp take a slice of your cash). Released as a “pay what you want” album, TV COMA are donating all proceeds to the Music Venue Trust which s independent venues while they have to remain closed.
It’s a punk covers album in the vein of Me First and Gimme Gimmes featuring a bevy of quickfire singles from the 50s. The originals were great and TV COMA have done them all great credit while jazzing (well, punking) them up a bit in the process. I’m sure many of the titles are familiar – “Lollipop”, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?”, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, “We’ll Meet Again”… Each one has been sped up, bounced up and injected with 20mg of smiles.
The only bad thing about this collection is that it only runs for about twelve minutes due to the abbreviated nature of some of the songs. On the other hand, it adds to its charm. You get enough of a blast for each song to get into it and whoosh onto the next one. And of course, you can always just play it through again!
A brilliant splash of summer, and for a good cause. Definitely worth a listen – and some of your cash.
