EP Review: Moonlight Desires – At The Movies

Moonlight Desires are a covers act I’ve never heard of before, which is a shame as they focus on the 80s, an era I have fond memories of as it made up ten years of my childhood. It also had the best popular music in recent history (the 60s were great, so were the 80s and everything else since then has been shit – blame Simon Cowell and his ilk). Thankfully we have a recent resurgence in 80s artists playing live again, some even releasing new material. And we have quality cover bands like Moonlight Desires.

At The Movies‘ title gives the game away a little, as it features four songs you’ll definitely know if you’re my age. They’ve been “rocked up” a little, but are still the very recognisable classics you’ll surely love.

The tracks featured are Peter Cetera’s “Glory of Love” (Karate Kid), “Hungry Eyes” (Eric Carmen, Dirty Dancing), “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” by Cyndi Lauper (no prizes for naming the film), and “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds which featured in The Breakfast Club. I mean, these are four hugely recognisable songs which, though these days likely most commonplace at wedding receptions, are going to be recognised by us old folks.

I just wish there were more than the four songs on here, because what’s on offer is great. I’ve played the EP on a loop since I popped it on to review it and it’s definitely going to keep on playing. None of the tracks are hugely different from their original recordings, but it doesn’t matter. They’re all just designed for being sung out loud, and you can warble along in the kitchen to these new versions as easily as you could have back when shoulder pads were in fashion.

A great little compilation that will raise a smile as much as your singing voice.

At The Movies is out on July 17th
