Six months on from The Ghost of Orion, British doom metal royalty once again turn on the misery with three new songs in the form of new EP Macabre Cabaret.
2020 has been a strange year and that includes not one but two new My Dying Bride releases in the same year after a 5-year wait. The first of the two, The Ghost of Orion is a slow burner so to have an EP so soon after I was slightly worried that these tracks were maybe an afterthought.
Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong as the ten-minute title track “Macabre Cabaret” is a fabulous example of just how powerful the band are at projecting their melancholic emotions to the listener and encasing them in their shroud of abject misery. Now, I’m going to make a bold statement here. This particular track moved me just as much as the first time I heard “The Cry Of Mankind” and it’s a track I keep going back to over and over and getting something different. This has to be my highlight track of the release as it has a real destructive essence.

Lamenting in next is “A Secret Kiss” which has two elements in particular – the screeching guitar riff that flows throughout and Singer Aaron Stainthorpe’s almost orchestral vocals.
Most surprising is the last track “A Purse of Gold and Stars” which has a soft and gentle piano intro, with an overall slow pulse throughout which is tainted in sadness and although it’s something that I am usually not a big fan of, in the context of this particular release works incredibly well.
