EP Review: Wednesday 13 – ‘Necrophaze – Antidote’

A quick 4-track release from the master of shock rock, Necrophaze – Antidote is a nice little mix. Two re-recordings, two covers and a guest appearance. It’s amazing what you can cram into four songs!

So what do we have? The opener is a reworking of a song on the Frankenstein Drag Queens’ album 6 Years 6 Feet Under The Influence, aptly titled “Your Mother Still Sucks Cock In Hell”. The original’s audio quality was nice and punky, but the new version definitely sounds better. Fuller, richer and meatier though overall it’s the same shock n’ roll classic it ever was. Backed with this is “Screwdriver 2 – The Return” which takes the Night of the Living Drag Queens original, whacks a layer of extra production value on top and updates the lyrics with a sequel style. Pretty much what a load of horror films do, in complete fairness.

The two covers are pretty good and well chosen to fit with Mr 13’s style. “Devil Inside” by U2 was released at the end of last year and is (until tomorrow) the only one you can listen to. Check it out below. “Films” was originally released by Gary Numan, a name perhaps familiar to Fear Factory fans for their cover of his “Cars” song that he actually performed guest vocals on! For Wednesday 13’s version of this track, the services of Calico Cooper – eldest daughter of Alice – have been enlisted. This in-house horror rock combo just seems to fit, keeping things “in the family” as it were. Ms Cooper is already a well-known actress, singer and director and it’s pleasing to see her involved in the exact setting which made her surname a household one.

All four songs are suitably creepy, though the first two are way more lively and classic Wednesday 13 in style. The fact that the covers are more at the downbeat end of the scale works to give a bunch of songs that cover several horror bases. Yeah, it’s only four tracks. Yeah, it’s only filler to keep us going until the next full album. But it’s good filler!
