Album Review: Ramrods – Bracelet Circus

Sometimes we get an album through and pick it randomly for review (at 2-3000 albums a year we kind of have to). And then we sit on the review for ages because other stuff comes up. However, this can work in the album’s favour as it means it gets more than a couple of listens.

Such was the case with Bracelet Circus which has been out for some time now. From what I gather, the physical release was on June 11th but I think it’s been streaming for much longer than that. However, over the last 2-3 weeks it’s been on and off my music player as I kept not quite getting around to writing words about it!

The German act bill themselves as “psychedelic rock”, though I’d say they encom a myriad of styles and they’re definitely not as “psych” as many 60s acts, for instance. There’s a definite classic rock tone, and by that I mean harking back to the 60s/70s. “The Last of the Bones” uses clean, steel guitar tones and skiffle beats to give a country music sound. “We’re Gonna Roam” hits you in the doom-ish feels, being more downtuned and chunky. “Two Of Our Kind” is piano-led and airy.

It’s as eclectic a rock album as you’re going to get, and I found Peter Harasim’s gravelly vocals a little hard to take at first. But those repeated listens really helped and I started to really enjoy them (though I still find the hard “g” sound in “Suffragette Woman” a little odd!).
