Album Review: HAQ123 – More…

I’ve got three kids so I know what a nightmare they can be at times. But HAQ123 contains two children (and one grown-up who should know better) who are giving me actual nightmares. If you think Rob Zombie or Wednesday 13 is creepy, the trust me when I say that those guys have nothing on this bunch. You know when you let a kid’s imagination run riot and don’t reign it in so that the ing public start giving you a wide berth (I know what I’m talking about here, my youngest told a nice lady that she ate people just last week)? You end up with TV shows like Axe Cop and albums like More…

There are three in the band. Milly sings and is 12. Zac drums and is 13. Dave plays bass and is really, really old. Like… 35 or something probably. Ancient. He should also know better as he’s Zac’s dad. This is their fifth album, so I think the younger ones have some photos or videos or something that they’re using to keep Dave on a short leash, and to help prevent themselves being locked up. These guys are weirder than a whole asylum-ful of Ward XVI’s.

More… features 13 tracks which thankfully only last a total of 22 minutes. Any longer and your brain would be more fried than it would be after playing gin rummy Nyarlathotep, supping elevenses with Shub Niggurath and a getting a sexy massage from Cthulhu. Many of the songs are based on real-life events, such as wasp stings and fairground ride accidents. These inopportune incidents are made a thousand times worse by being sung at you in the freakiest possible ways until your consciousness curls up in a little box, whimpering, and swallows the key.

I mean, I don’t know who “Richie” is, but I don’t want to meet him (“I get the red mist / I can see what I’m doing but I can’t stop myself / God help you if I get my hands on you”). And “Killer” is no less subtle (“Don’t mug me off / I’m warning you / I will kill everyone”).

All this accompanied by slow drum beats, low-end bass and strident keyboards. I would write more, but my psychotherapist tells me that my session time is almost up.

More… is distilled night terrors, made digital.

More… is out now and available via Bandcamp if you think you can make a successful Sanity roll
