Greece’s Anticreation unleash their abyssal debut album From the Dust of Embers.
The band enter 80s slasher soundtrack territory with short intro track “Faith’s Demystification” which leaves the listener almost in a bit of limbo before being utterly assaulted with title track “From the Dust of Embers” which has a lot of interesting layers and isn’t necessarily straight up black metal. It’s almost as if the next track “The Beauty of Lava” knows what I’m typing as there is a direction shift from duo Necro and Noctus with has a slight Rotting Christ feel to it.
Next up is the highlight track of the album. “Abomination Reborn” is littered with heart pounding basslines, whilst the slower brooding start blends really well in the inevitable tempo change with pulverising drums patterns galore.
The mid-part of the album almost feels like a well put together trilogy, the combination of “A Journey Into the Throat of Death”, “The Swarm” and “Unborn” flowing perfectly. The latter made me want to put on Akercocke’s Choronzon album, that first minute is just something else.

Although “Kathagiasis” does a good job in its role of ending track, with some great chanting midway, it does feel somewhat of a shame as the digital only bonus track “The Supreme Terror” fits in incredibly in the context and overall feel to aesthetic of this release. It’s worth making sure you grab this extra song.
I really hope that this album gets a fair bit of attention as it’s very well deserving of it as there are so many great parts including the sprinkles of ritualistic debris throughout.
From the Dust of Embers is just how like my coffee – mysterious and bleak.
