A surprise mini-release from Kazakh band (and former Band of the Day) Zarraza has been causing a bit of a stir for all the right reasons. Featuring three classic tracks covered from three different bands (and some brilliant artwork which riffs on one of the original bands), Zarraza have added their own traditional twist to each, while still being fairly faithful to the originals.
The songs featured are Kreator’s “People of the Lie”, Gojira’s “L’Enfant Sauvage” and the legendary “Raining Blood” by Slayer. Fans of the originals will be quite at home with these cover versions, though Zarazza do perform in their own style. Vocals are harsher than the source material, but what really sets these versions apart is the subtle use of Middle Eastern musical instruments. These aren’t folk metal renditions, but the extra layer is one that tickles at the back of your ears. You know there’s something a little different and sometimes you have to focus to realise what it is… and then you get that “oh, wow, that works really well” moment.

The most noticeable is the intro to “Reign In Blood”, but the undertone is there on and off throughout the rest of the track as well. Even without this little addition, they’re very capable cover versions and Kreated in Blood is an enjoyable 3-song excursion which should hopefully bring Zarraza some well-deserved attention.
