Album Review: Quit It! – Spilling Out

Way back in the depths of time (almost exactly two years ago), we featured Calgary’s Quit It! as Band of the Day. The four-piece formed during the pandemic, coming from other acts, and had produced a few tracks. Now we have a full release from them, which was released in October.

Quit It!’s original spin on melodic punk rock is that all four are vocalists. Not just backing up one or two main singers, but either all going for it, or taking turns to lead a track. This provides a very eclectic sound across the album, almost like a compilation release. A change in vocalist is always more noticeable than, say, a guest guitarist and as a result the twelve songs seem more like a collection of EPs crammed together. By no means a bad thing! Also, each singer is very different in style, and they seem to have picked the songs that work best for them… again pushing that variety button that I love so much. Spilling Out is not an album that’s going to get stale quickly.

As a result, we have songs that are quite punk, some others that are more rock and roll, one that’s folk punk… It makes for a very enjoyable, easy listen that you can also really get into. It’s the folky one, “Clobberin’ Time” that stands out as the pick of the album. Short and sweet, it gets the pulse going before leading into the multi-vocalled “The Bitter End” perfectly.

Quit It! have something quite original in their makeup and I’d really like to see how this transfers to a live performance. Organised chaos!
