Taking a journey back through the ages once more The Wolves of Avalon bring along a vision of the Gododdin – northern warriors whose battles against the Angle tribes are documented in ancient Welsh poems by the bard Aneirin – with latest album Y Gododdin.
Opening track “Through The Murdering Night” immediately sets the tone with its narrative style, this is then followed by my highlight track “Men Of Gododdin” which still has tinges of narration but is blended with various styles of vocals and has a quickening pace with some really nice tones.
Loaded with atmosphere “The Shining Company” builds in power and intensity but still maintains a sweeping melancholy throughout with a great chorus. It is paired wonderfully with “Dead Men’s Cloak”, in which the inclusion of a violin part really lends itself to this altogether folk-led track.
The album concludes with its longest track, the near eight minute “Is This How It’s Meant To Be”, which encomes everything that is great about Y Gododdin. Melodies are rife as, too, is the narrative style which is done so well. The track flows effortlessly through its various parts and nothing feels like an afterthought – everything slots into its allocated place. I particularly enjoyed the slightly darker edge this track took on.
The Wolves Of Avalon are known for recruiting well known musicians to do battle with them, and Y Gododdin is no exception featuring the talents of Tony ‘Demolition Man’ Dolan (Venom Inc), Thurios (Drudkh), Hoest (Taake), Wulfstan (Forefather) and Nico Millar (Aklash).
