Godsmack are one of those bands who as soon as your hear a track you know it’s them, now I’m no way being disingenuous with this comment, far from it, as for me, there a very few bands who have the ability to evoke an immediate emotional response and this band seem to manage it every single time. Case in point the opening track “You and I” on new album, Lighting up the Sky.
Anthemic is not a word I use often but “Red White & Blue” is just that, the charging riffs and the pace combined with Sully Erna’s gravelly tones which I have always been a fan of are in fine form here. It’s ably followed by “Surrender” and early highlight, the soon to be live favourite, “What About Me?” which has a great singalong chorus.
One thing the band also do so well is a ballad, there are always elements of pain and heartache and obviously come from a deep personal place. “Truth” is the one track I have gone back to over and over therefore it has to be my highlight track of the album.

Fortunately the emotions are then supercharged with the trio “Hell’s Not Dead”, “Soul On Fire” & “Let’s Go” which I can foresee being a future single. The album moves along with soundscapes of previous albums “Best Of Times” almost has a “I Stand Alone” feel to it while the slower “Growing Old” has the ballad feel but with a slight blues twist.
Concluding this album nine is the title track “Lighting Up The Sky” which I think it a great choice. It’s quintessential Godsmack, with some nice surprises thrown in.
