We are all very well versed of how the Covid 19 quarantines were felt globally and now something created by accident in of those times how now come to fruition. Greece’s Decemberance were exploring a different soundscape which, when added to their familiar mechanism of melancholy, spawned their latest release Implosions.
When I say that the album has a colossal opener it by no way an exaggeration. “Scaffold” is twenty four and a half minutes long. The waves of emotion that pour through into doom laden tones weave effortlessly into each other and it has the time to explore other avenues to complement the band’s heavier side.
The instrumental almost movie score-like “The Blue Scaffold” was the catalyst for this release and its placement right at the centre couldn’t have been better placed. It flows into final track “Shrouds” which makes the album’s opener seem considerably short in comparison. It’s hugely ambitious and at nearly thirty eight (yes you read that right) minutes could have stood alone on this release.
There have been albums that have done similar things in recent times but the difference here is this is pure unadulterated death doom with a real nostalgic feel to it. At times it even has hints of Paradise Lost’s Gothic and anybody that knows me knows that’s not a bad thing. “Shrouds” is absolutely my highlight track of the release, and even though it is something you can separate out, I highly recommend taking the time to appreciate and fully immerse yourself in it.
This album wasn’t even on my radar, so not only was it a great thing to find but it’s something I know I will come back to again and again.
A triple delivery of despair.
