Album Review: Dark The Suns – Raven And The Nightsky

Finnish melodic metal trio Dark The Suns release their fifth studio album Raven And The Nightsky.

Core Mikko and Inka Ojala have enlisted Jani Moilanen whose influence soon takes hold. Opening track “Adamantine” is dark and piano-laden whereas “Phoenix” demonstrates his softer style making for quite a nice gothic metal twist.

Woefully treading into doom territory is highlight track “Kun Aallot Kallioihin Murtuu”, some great elements highlighted with subtle undertones of atmospheric sorrow.

“Aurora” has some nice, prominent basslines and piano pieces before moving onto the album’s only guest appearance with “Raven”, featuring former contestant on The Voice and now vocalist for Beyond The Dawn, Paavo Laapotti

Moving back into the slower doomier side once again with a sense of ease is “Shadows Upon the Broken Hearts” which is dominated by piano pieces and haunting melodies, complimented by one the album’s heavier tracks “Swans of the Frozen Waters”

“The Sea Of Sorrow” is a wonderful embodiment of the spirit contained in this album. It combines the elements and presents them in a way that still stand out. This gives the two final tracks “Under the Northern Lights” and “In The Midst” the chance to highlight Dark The Suns’ collective musicianship with flares of melancholy and sorrow.
