A debut album, you say? From a melo-death band? From Finland? Sure, I’ll give that a… wait, they’re all 18-19 years old? GIVE ME THAT ALBUM.
And that’s how I came to review Meadows of Misfortune, ten tracks of blistering yet catchy fury from the country where you have to do something with your time when you’re not driving on snow, or trying to figure out how to switch the damn sun off after three months of continual daylight.
The band don’t mess around and after the title track (which is a short intro), “Internal Torment” has plenty to offer in of flailing guitar and pounding drums. The vocals are both spoken and screamed, plenty atmospheric, and you get a really dark feeling from the track as a whole. It’s with “Golden Maiden”, though, that the band really get into their stride and I found my foot tapping. This one hooked me and I wasn’t really let go until I got to the end of the album.

“Deceitful Phoenix” has a great riff at the start, and “All On My Own” brings a touch of doom and black metal overtones. Closer “False Messiah” is a great way to round off the record with some great clean vocals. While the band have their boundaries, they’re obviously happy to push them a bit while they’re finding their feet.
It took me a song or two to get into Meadows, but once I did I found myself really enjoying it. It’s a little rough around the edges, but shows a ton of promise and Pestilent Scars are definitely a band to keep an eye on.
