A rare free moment meant that I could dig into our huge pile of independent bands and grab one for review. We do try our best to feature these artists so please give them your !
Sin of God are from Hungary, and as far as I work out Blood Bound is their fourth album. They are loosely described as death metal and they very much fit into that genre, at the more extreme end of the scale. Definitely no melo-death present in the seven tracks being thrust upon you here! The first band that springs to mind as the title track rampages forth is Morbid Angel. Old school Morbid Angel. Only heavier. And faster.
This isn’t just an all out sonic barrage, though. There are lulls where the “heavy” gets a chance to build before all Hell is once again let loose upon the listener. Lyrics are guttural and harsh, and the guitars have that classic deathmetal sawtooth edge to them. Sin of God manage to pack quite a few riffs in amongst the rapid-fire rhythms, and the drums are impressive. Maintaining a speedy double kick through most songs to keep you heart racing, there is a more steady pounding on the other drums.
Not every track is a shredder, though. For those who want something more doomy, the band slow things down a bit/lot for “Diabolical Agitation”. This one reverses things a little, predominantly being a slow nodder with the very occasional flurry of drums and fretwork.
Blood Bound doesn’t break any musical barriers, but most death metal bands don’t set out to do this. There’s a workable formula, and Sin of God have stuck to it… and it’s paid off. The whole album is as heavy a slice of death metal as I’ve ever enjoyed, with the kind of production that well known bands with a big label behind them would be proud of. Expect your headphones to be begging for mercy by the time you’ve finished this one.
