After we published our review of the Band of the Day feature!
So I was happy to give the new release a spin and see why I enjoyed their slot all those years ago. In short, they’re poppy and punky, with a nice mellow edge and some catchy rhythms, wrapping around some more than decent lyrics. Imagine The Wildhearts, but just a bit more laid back and less angry.
The opener, and title track, throws in everything you need to know. Cracking riffs and multiple guitars with a stomping beat behind them. This is a song you can bounce to. The band have aimed to get their live presence squirted into the digital realm as accurately as possible and on the basis of this single track they’ve done a damn fine job.
Not every song is a bounce-fest, though. “Canaries in the Coalmine”, for example, is more laid back and the kind of thing you’d sway or not along to. There’s definite Beatles edge to it, too, which is never a bad thing. If you want something with a bit more punch then head for “We Don’t Have Much, But It’s Ours”, another uplifting number and one which carries the same message as the recent Lottery Winners album – keep on keeping on.
With most songs being single-friendly 3-4 minutes in length it’s a bit of a surprise to get a 6-and-a-half minute final number in “Beautiful Day” but it’s perfectly placed. You know when you finish a film and they shove a relaxing, emotive song at the end while the credits roll? That’s what Eureka Machines have done here. It’s a sidestep and yet possibly the best song on Everything though that may just be the mood I’m in when I’m listening to it!
Everything is a cracking release and heartily recommended for anyone who likes The Wildhearts, Terrorvision, et al.
