Arriving at The Talking Heads this evening, I am immediately struck by the atmosphere – friendly, welcoming, excited – as it should be, this is after all The Lounge Kittens’ home town gig and the first stop on their first headlining tour celebrating their amazing new album Sequins and C-Bombs. The place is heaving at the sold out venue and the crowd can’t wait!
On stage the Kittens immediately launch into their epic version of Andrew WK’s “Party Hard”, really getting the audience going! This is soon followed by System of a Down’s “Bounce” – for this, I strongly suggest everyone head to YouTube and watch this video!
Next up is a ‘sing-a-long’ with Toto’s “Africa”. Now, from my review, you may be aware that of all the Lounge Kittens’ songs this is the only one I am not a fan of on the album, however I can honestly say, it is so much better live!
As the night progresses everyone gets more excited and enjoys the Kittens’ performance. Following songs from the new album (“Smack my Firestarter to Outer Space”, “Want You Bad”) and an older song (“Rollin’” of Limp Bizkit fame), Timia demonstrates a talent we were not aware of – her ability to beat box!
Soon people get introduced to Zan’s infamous T-rexican-wave. In case you aren’t one of the initiated, this is a Mexican wave with hands like a T-rex! A massive hit with every Lounge Kitten crowd I have yet to see!
Whilst The Kittens were in the studio they heard that a legend had died, they learned of David Bowie’s death. As a tribute they recorded “Changes”, and what an amazing version, a real lovely track.
My favourite track of the night was up next – “Gloryhole” by Steel Panther. The Kittens have previously toured with these guys, I have to it, to date my favourite gig moment was watching The Kittens play this in the main foyer of The O2 Arena at Stonefree festival. Let’s just say, it isn’t a PC song to start with and The Kittens’ version is no more PC than the original. A lot of shocked parents!!!
They finished with their awesome punk medley, as featured when they played at The Isle of Wight Festival. Between photographing I tried to keep a tally of the songs in this medley so here goes! “Fat Bottom Girls” (Queen), “Whatever You Want” (Status Quo), “Nasty” (The Damned), “Place Your Hands” (Reef), “The Day We Caught the Train” (Ocean Colour Scene), “The Bartender and the Thief” (Stereophonics), “Buck Rogers” (Feeder), “Nobody to Love” (Sigma), “All By Myself” (Celine Dion), “Just a Day” (Feeder), “Breathless” (The Corrs), “Ever Fallen in Love” (Buzzcocks), “Year 3000” (Busted), “Pinball Wizard” (The Who), “Goody Two Shoes” (Adam Ant), “Stand and Deliver” (Adam and the Ants), “Don’t Stop Me Now” (Queen) and finally “We are the Champions” (Queen).
Phew! Ladies, let me know if I missed any?
