Ivory Blacks is not one of my normal venues I must it. In contrast to the vast majority of other venues I’ve visited this year, I’ve only been there 3 times this year and those times have been at the beginning, middle and now the end of the year. It’s not a bad venue and I personally think it gets underused. Anyway, enough about the venue and onto the concert!
Opening the evening were local Greenock metallers, Scintilla (7). I’d personally never heard of the band but I have a policy of trying anything once so as I set about photographing them, I kept my ears open to get an idea of what they were like. Whilst their sound might have been a little too different to the rest of the bands that evening, there was no denying that they had a lot of groove and were well rehearsed. One bit of advice I will give them though: engage with your audience more. They’re there to see you and will give you more energy if you chat and otherwise communicate with them. Aside from that, I rather enjoyed their set and look forward to seeing them again in the future.
Next up on the stage were another local band, Titan Breed (6). Having heard from one of our other writers that they were somewhat of an ‘acquired taste’ I went into their set not knowing what to expect. Whilst they did have a tight sound and did engage with the crowd, they didn’t really do it for me. The clean vocals were slightly off-key and the harsh vocals were really not fitting with their style of riffing. That being said though, their cover of a Killswitch engage song was rather enjoyable and the small crowd that had now gathered seemed to rather enjoy them.
It was then time for the band that I was most looking forward to seeing, Primitai (10). Coming on stage to “Black Rider” from this year’s Night Brings Insanity (review here), they immediately set about doing what they do best – playing great music and getting everyone either nodding or singing along to the music. Whilst the vast majority of the set was from their later albums, the did pull out a couple of older tracks like “Line of Fire” and “The Cannibal” which went down a treat. One of the highlights had to be “Power Surge” with vocalist Guy introducing it by saying; “We have Serj and Sergio on lead guitars. Together we call them, The Power Surge!”. Finishing the set with the classic “Scream When You See Us”, the band delivered a stellar performance and I wholeheartedly look forward to seeing them many more times in the future!
The final band of the night, Triaxis (8), then came onto the stage for what would be front-woman Krissie’s penultimate concert. Whilst their style of music wasn’t really for me, there was no denying that they were playing some great music and were popular with the small crowd that had gathered there to see the show. However, due to there being an early curfew they weren’t able to play all the songs they had on their list. The songs they did play though were excellent and there is no doubt they will continue to go from strength to strength once they start-up again with their new singer.
