Gig Review: Nashville Pussy / Earl of Hell – Bannermans, Edinburgh (31st October 2024)

Earl of Hell (c) Gary Cooper

Bannermans in Edinburgh is the place to be tonight if you like pussy — Nashville Pussy, that is! But first up are local fuzz-rockers Earl of Hell, who kick off with “My Twisted Mind,” bouncing along with an early Sabbath vibe—a killer start. They tear through a powerful set, including the intense “Impaler,” with thundering guitars and fierce vocals in a stunning, full-on song. Earl of Hell wraps up with “Hang ’em High,” a doom-fuzz track that meets Hawkwind head-on, and it’s fantastic. Their fuzzy, doom-laden sound really resonates, and these guys can play; I’ll definitely catch them again. If they’re near you, go see them live—your feet will be tapping, your head nodding, and you’ll have a blast.

Now, for the band that puts the rock in rock ’n’ roll: Nashville Pussy! Being a fan for years, I saw them last at La Belle in Edinburgh, so I knew what to expect but was excited all the same. They hit the stage to “Hocus Pocus” and launch straight into “Pussy’s Not a Dirty Word,” and the place is bouncing from the first note of pure, dirty rock ’n’ roll. They keep the 100 mph show going with “Piece of Ass”—a breathtaking rollercoaster of a song, with Ruyter in full Angus mode and Dusty killing it on drums. The crowd goes wild with “Come On Come On,” a rock ’n’ roll barnstormer featured on Peacemaker, with a chorus made for audience sing-alongs.

The drums roll into the swagger of “Speed Machine,” with Bonnie thumping the bass and Ruyter exuding pure rock attitude on guitar. The set continues with “High as Hell” and “Ain’t Your Business,” before Blaine promises to “Hitchhike Down to Cincinnati and Kick the Shit Outta Your Drunk Daddy”—another 100 mph tune as the heat and energy reach a fever pitch. They crank it up further with “Going Down,” a thrash-worthy track, before switching to the laid-back blues of “Hate and Whisky.” One of my favourites, “Pillbilly Blues,” kicks in with dirty swagger, and many in the crowd can’t help but dance.

The crunching guitars lead into the groove-laden “Till the Meat Falls Off the Bone.” You can’t beat a frontman pouring beer into his hat, then drinking it straight from there! With no encore break at Bannermans, they go straight into “Rub It to Death,” followed by the ‘70s-infused “Why Why Why,” and close with the blistering “Go Motherfucker Go”—a perfect end to a night of full-throttle rock ’n’ roll. Nashville Pussy never disappoints; they deliver raw rock with drinking out of hats, Jack Daniels sprayed over the crowd, and guitars cranked up to 11. The place was hot, sweaty, and packed, with everyone bouncing, dancing, and singing along all night. You’ve gotta love Pussy—Nashville Pussy, that is! Go see them and have a fantastic time, because I know we all did.
