Review: Table Scraps – My Obsession

When garage punks Table Scraps’ new single landed in my inbox, to say I was a little excited would be a massive understatement. This recently expanded three piece are making real waves in the punk rock world. Making a return following Scott Vincent’s (guitar/vocals) skeletal surgery, he and Poppy Twist (drums/vocals) have added bass player TJ to their current line-up.

ing Black Mekon’s split 7″ series, “My Obsession” is set for release on 28th April via the band’s own label; Hell’s Teeth. Their limited edition 7″ comes with 3D artwork and glasses to view it and their new video with, and I’m not talking those knock off Ray-Ban lookalikes you get at the cinema these days; I’m talking old school red and blue retro lenses – I’m already sold! (official video below)

You know when you play a track for the first time and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up? Well, second play through and not only do they remain up but I’m covered in goosebumps too.

From the minute Poppy’s pounding drum intro begins, amalgamating with Scott’s scuzzy guitar hooks and TJ’s dirty grunge tones on the bass, I’m under their spell. Grimy as they come, this dark, grungy number would sit well within any of Quentin Tarantino’s grimmest of scenes.

Spiked with psychedelic twists, this bitter break up song delves into the harsh emotions of being messed around, taken for a fool and then cruelly cast aside. The angst and pain eloquently expressed through Scott and Poppy’s combined haunting and melodic vocals. These painful emotions are manifested in Scott’s estranged guitar distortions towards the end of the track perfectly. If I had the very slightest of grumbles it’s that these tones for me, were slightly buried by the drums at this point.

“My Obsession” is an outstanding track, I can’t wait to see the video in 3D when my glasses land; if the single artwork is anything to go by, it’s gonna be as dark as they come. Dirty, scuzzy, garage punk; you’re gonna lap up this track if that’s your thing – I’m obsessed! You can catch Table Scraps live with Black Mekon on April 27th at Hare and Hounds Birmingham for their launch night, plus London and Liverpool dates in May.
