Single Review: Unqualified Nurse Band – Spit & Howl

Self proclaimed “death surfers” Unqualified Nurse Band have been on my radar for a while now, but a band I have as yet not been fortunate to see. Local to my neck of the woods and, yeah I’ll it it, the band name was what made me prick up my ears in the first place. I’ve just never been in the right place at the right time – it’s a nurse (unqualified or not) thing, I’m sure the guys’ll understand.

Therefore I was super excited when they got in touch to let me know about their new project and latest single release “Spit & Howl”, the first song from the new LP UNB3 which is being released one song at a time throughout 2018. They explain:

We don’t stop writing. Songs are falling out of us but it’s not financially viable for a band like us to put out a “traditional” full length every year.

This way we can break up recording costs, etc. and rather than condensing the focus to a specific release date and tour, the whole year is basically a giant release party. It’s also a step into the unknown which is exciting; we don’t know how the record will sound as we haven’t written all of it yet. Circumstance and where we’re recording will affect the songs and hopefully people will want to us for this ride into the unknown.

“Spit & Howl” is a ferocious lick of in-your-face-punk. A gradual build of scuzzy riffs, rousingly dark bass tones and frantic vocals make your heart race and your breathing heavy as you pogo around to the ever-increasing velocity and amplitude. Full of bravado, you’re encouraged to throw caution to the wind and live every day as if it’s your last.

You can’t help but sing along to the “ooh-woah-oh”s towards the end of the track and I find myself air punching and shouting “fuck yeah!” as it reaches its frenzied peak.

I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this creative and developing album that will surely take us all on a journey with the band throughout the process.
