Cheshire based band This is Turin have been described as a blackened technical death metal band, which means that there will be a lot going on in each of their compositions. I must it, even though I have heard a couple of songs from the band and seen their name cropping up on festivals and ing major acts like Gojira, Slayer and Soulfly, I haven’t given the band the justice they deserve. When Rachael at Enso Music Management ed me about the band, I was more than happy to give a listen to the first single from their enticing and thought provoking project. This is Turin are releasing a single for each of the seven deadly sins. I wonder if they ever made a film about that…?
The first sin that the band have released is called “Wrath”. With an opening sequence that wouldn’t be far off being on an MZ.412 record before the blast beats and technical guitars come in. The guitars are fast and heavy but not quite as down tuned as old school death metal and for me, they are in the Akercocke/The Antichrist Imperium school of thought when it comes to the riffs. The difference between those bands and This is Turin are the devastatingly heavy vocals from Darryl and when he growls “Absolution is thrown away”, you realise this is when the band comes into their own.
The first section of the song continues in the vein of incessant and precise blast beats from Ben and believe it or not, a tune where you can hear the technical and proficient bass playing from James keeping Ben in check. Twin guitarists Anthony and Davey like to mix the new school of death metal with the old school and show themselves to be very talented guitarists and keep everything fresh, keeping the listener guessing as to where the track will go next. Highlight for me was the ending sequence of the song with multiple leads with Darryl growling “I am Wrath” and when you see the below video, his veins are popping out of his head such is his ferocity.
Overall, the song “Wrath” has certainly piqued my interest in the band and I will certainly be looking out for them in the future. Regulars on the touring and festival circuit, ypu are sure to see them play in a town near you soon. I can already picture Darryl coming off the stage and growling in the middle of the pit while all other bandmates go mental on stage.
This is Turin are not afraid to be diverse and indeed embrace it and make “Wrath” a much stronger beast. This is not for the faint hearted and I look forward to seeing what sin the band commits next.
