Single Review: Blacklist – Blood Baptism

For those who were wise enough to pick up a copy of Moshin’ the Roof On Vol 3 in March this year, you’ll have had the old earholes savaged by “Blood Baptism” by Blackpool thrashers Blacklist. For those that weren’t, now is the hour, for Blacklist are releasing the track as their latest single and it’s such a ferocious slab of metal that it’s worth giving it a short review.

The band who recorded “Blood Baptism” comprised Matthew Mcloughlin – guitar & backing Vocals, Curtis Goodyear – bass & backing vocals, Matthew Warburton – drums and Tyler Larkin on guitar and lead vocals. The track starts in rampant form, dramatically soaring with a raging intensity, then changing pace several times, switching from heads down thrashing goodness to slower, majestic elements which allow the guitars time to harmonise and the impact soak in. Larkin’s gruff delivery may not be to everyone’s liking but his rough, shouty style brings an angry, semi-crossover approach which suits the song.

A frantic first solo from Larkin erupts after about 2:30, before Mcloughin slices in with the second solo. Some gang chanting emphasises the chorus, whilst the band bring it home in style with a standard thrash chug that fades slowly out. Blacklist are another of the current crop of UK thrash bands who are hardworking and part of a burgeoning scene which is currently looking incredibly healthy.  This single is a reminder of that. And if you like this single, then it is also worth checking out their debut album Disciples of Time that has just ed it’s one year anniversary.
