Single Review: Eulogy – Pain is Mine

South Wales four-piece Eulogy had a good year in 2022. They reached the final of the Metal to the Masses competition, increased their gigs and profile and welcomed drummer Josh Bird into the fold. Bird’s arrival along with the band’s expansion to a four-piece with the arrival of guitarist Brian Perkins gave the band a bigger sound, and their increased heaviness was noted by many during that M2TM journey.

Whilst 2022 was a good year, there is much excitement about 2023 and the band’s debut album Rebirth, which is due out in March. Ahead of that release, the band drop the first single “Pain is Mine” and it’s a fiery beast alright. It’s inevitable that comparisons will be drawn with a certain band from San Francisco because from the opening bars, “Pain is Mine” resembles Metallica in many ways. Vocalist Neil Thomas has adopted a Hetfield sneer in his delivery, to the extent that I reckon that if you told people that it was the second release from 72 Seasons, they would believe you. But to dismiss Eulogy as mere clones would do the Welsh outfit a huge disservice for there is much more to this track and this band.

“Pain is Mine” contains a huge drum sound and it rattles along at a thunderous pace, albeit not quite at the Motörhead speed that ‘Metallica have conjured up. The hook is catchy, the playing cohesive and direct, Bird’s solid drumming combining with the driving bass of singer Neil Thomas brings a real dynamism to the band. Mike Williams’ lead break is fluid and organic, simple yet fitting in to the overall song. The way the song expands out in the latter part also works well. You’ll soon find yourself singing the chorus, humming the song and generally relistening to it in your head. There’s a swagger and confidence within Eulogy that can only come from their experience over the past few years, and which is now bearing fruit. Listen to” Pain is Mine” back-to-back with tracks like “Cross to Bare” from their previous EP Memento Mori and you see a genuine development in both song writing and playing.

One can only hope that three years on, the world will be more stable when Rebirth arrives than when Memento Mori dropped, mere weeks before the world went to shit. Surely the gods of metal won’t be that cruel a second time around?
