24 Songs of Xmas / Single Review: The Plague – “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”

The Plague - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town CoveThis is an odd Christmas single… but odd in a good way.

This is “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” as you have never heard it before (apart from, perhaps, in your nightmares). It has to be said that this release does not entirely follow the traditional lyrics, but instead, concentrates on just how creepy some of those lyrics are:

“He sees you when you’re sleepin’,
He knows when you’re awake,
he knows if you’ve been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake.”

It has long been observed that this verse, in particular, could be seen as more than a little scary. The Plague’s version of this song just takes that observation to its logical conclusion!

The song starts with a spoken version of the first verse: “You better watch out, You better not cry…” but delivered by someone who sounds frightened by the prospect. These lines are repeated, but second time through, a child’s voice is added, stating: “Santa Claus is comin’ to town?” and sounding utterly terrified. There is then a full on growl of this line as the music really kicks off. Another spoken section in the middle starts with a child itting they haven’t done their homework. The retribution from Santa is almost instant. The verse about making a naughty and nice list is essentially absent: the clear implication is that everyone is on the naughty list!

No jolly holly and tinsel to be seen but a wonderfully weird addition to any Christmas playlist.
